Overview

What is Lex Legal Immersion?

Rotations to different law firms each day give you hands-on experience with diverse cases, fields, and lawyers, and guidance by someone from a U.S. JD background. This lets you:

  1. Travel abroad in a single or multi-city program tailored for pre-law

  2. Understand the life of a lawyer across a variety of legal fields

  3. Stand out on law school applications with a unique experience abroad, while freeing your time at home to focus on your GPA

The Value of Lex

A Life-Changing Experience

As a busy pre-law student, trying to coordinate a unique & meaningful legal experience can be difficult and not always rewarding. Lex programs give you very meaningful legal experience, and one that is good enough as to allow for the “luxury” of focusing more on grades during your semesters, while at the same time refining and showcasing most of the competencies that law schools assess candidates on. This overall experience is part of why our alumni can succeed in their law paths post-college.

A Week In The Life

Each day of a Lex program follows a similar structure, but no day is the exactly same. Over the course of the program, Lex students will visit a variety of different law firms and legal institutions, explore and analyze real cases, gain a network of peer and professional contacts, receive training and mentorship from their Legal Associate, and explore a new city.

Law Firm Experience

During an average program, Lex students are immersed into law firm offices, about 3 per week, each in a variety of practice areas. During each firm visit, Lex students meet with attorneys, learn directly from them about the nature of their work and specific area of legal practice, and answer the students’ questions.

The attorneys will then provide any pertinent background information the students need before presenting a real-world case, usually one the attorneys have worked on themselves, for the students to analyze with guidance from the Legal Associate. This offers students the unique opportunity to learn through real cases presented by the lawyers who argued them.

This also offers firsthand exposure to a wide range of legal practice areas, and helps students make well-educated decisions about their law school choices and legal careers.

(Pre-Law Focused) Law School Training

Some Lex Fellows describe the legal trainings as a “crash course of 1L”. The intention of these trainings is to ensure that students leave Lex with mastery of the major 1L concepts, be ahead of the curve in terms of legal knowledge before entering law school, and succeed in their law school admissions and future legal career.

Each Lex program has a dedicated Legal Associate, who is someone from a U.S. J.D. background, responsible for giving ongoing legal training sessions to the program participants.

These legal trainings consist of comprehensive presentations on each of the 1L doctrinal courses, essential legal vocabulary, guidance on the law school application process, moot court sessions, and more. Students practice and receive feedback on legal writing, as well as legal research.

Additionally, during extended learning opportunities, students will reinforce what they’ve learned while on law firm visits and from legal trainings. This may include working on practice problems, debating with their cohort on relevant public policy issues, preparing for the law school application process.

Legal Excursions

A favorite of our students: once a week, Lex Fellows participate in Legal Excursions. These excursions could include visiting a courthouse or attending a trial - something related to the field of law that also gets students out and about in their host city while visiting a unique legal environment other than a law firm. Afterwards during training sessions students reflect on their experience with Legal Associate and how it connects to their future in law.

By exploring their host city, engaging with locals, and enjoying the delights and challenges of an immersive experience, Lex students also deepen and broaden their understanding of the culture that shapes the law.

Application Process

If you are a serious pre-law student, we’d love to help you jumpstart your future in law. The first step is an online application, and the next stage in the process is a Discussion Call with a Lex representative, and usually a Lex alum (U.S. pre-law student).

Once accepted, our team will help you select a program that works for your schedule and location preferences. You can always apply now, or, if you’re not quite ready to apply, we can keep you updated as our programs open and close.
