London’s centre contains the imposing Houses of Parliament, the iconic ‘Big Ben’ clock tower, and Westminster Abbey, the site of British monarch coronations. Across the Thames River, the London Eye observation wheel provides panoramic views of the entire city, including the South Bank cultural complex.
Originally called Londinium by the Romans who founded it, London was a small city until recent history. The entire city was contained in the walls the Romans built for it. This area is now called The City of London, which is home to London’s central business district.
