Katherine Aguilar | Admissions Coordinator

Before her time at Lex, Katherine held several positions in campus ministry and teaching. A Los Angeles native, she attended Mount Saint Mary’s University. Katherine enjoys spending time with friends, volunteering at her church, eating sushi and dancing.


Luz Aramburo | Admissions Coordinator

Before joining the Lex team, Luz worked with nonprofits focusing on human trafficking prevention. Although she is now based in Lex’s D.C. office, Luz spent most of her life in Los Cabos, Mexico and San Diego, where she studied business administration at Point Loma Nazarene University.


Leif Pilegaard | Senior Admissions Coordinator

Having studied abroad twice and worked with multiple study abroad programs such as TASIS and Atlantis, Leif now works as a Senior Admissions Coordinator on the Lex team. He comes from a Danish background and was born and raised in the Sacramento Valley in California. Leif enjoys assisting students interested in law and sharing his knowledge of the study abroad world with them.


Antonio Gonzalez | Operations Director

Antonio has extensive international and operations experience internationally, having grown up in Spain, attended college in London, and worked for multiple years in management at Asian and Indian companies. He has worked for several years in study-abroad operations at Atlantis Global and now leads the Lex team.


Sydney Shufelt | Interim Executive Director

Sydney is in her final year of law school at American University School of Law, where she participates in the Moot Court Team and the Business Law Review. Prior to taking on the role of Executive Director, she served as a Lex Legal Advisor, training Fellows on four different sessions in Europe. Sydney earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from Houghton College.


J.P. Toste | Chairman 

J.P. has an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  Native to the Azores Islands in Portugal, J.P. co-founded The Lex Fellowship and has been involved with study abroad programs for almost a decade in different capacities.

Brian Whalen | Chief Academic Officer & Dean of Education

Among the most well-known and influential international education leaders currently working in the field, Brian served for more than a decade (2006-2018) as the President and CEO of The Forum on Education Abroad, the first Standards Development Organization (SDO) worldwide focused on international education. During his long career, Brian has developed or overseen education abroad programs in more than 50 countries, has delivered dozens of presentations and trainings in the U.S. and many other countries, has collaborated to secure nearly $4 million in grants in support of international education initiatives, and has participated in high level meetings as a discussant at the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Education, and the White House.
